Not that we didn’t all see this coming, but the 2020 Summer Olympics are going to be postponed. A member from the International Olympic Committee stated that “On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided.”
This comes after a ton of pressure was received from Olympic federations of Germany, Brazil and Norway and after Canada and Australia stated they would not send athletes to the Summer games.
It was also pretty clear that many athletes did not want the games to happen as 4,000 track and field athletes across the world were polled and 78% said that the games should be postponed.
The exact parameters around the postponement have not been figured out but we know for sure that the games will not begin on July 24 as they have been scheduled.
Some have speculated that the games could be pushed back a couple of months but I think it is most likely that we will see a one-year postponement. There’s just too much risk involved with pushing it back a couple of months, especially if there were to be a second surge in outbreaks.
We should know how they are going to handle this postponement over the span of the next couple of weeks.
